Cheerleading has been a big part of my life since I was in 2nd grade and on the “prep” team at Allison Elementary. I cheered every year after that. I also was involved for a few years with competitive cheerleading when I was younger, where I developed my tumbling skills.
Cheerleading is more than bows and football games. It promotes fitness and good health choices. You create a special bond and trust among team members. Would you trust just anyone to throw you high up in the air AND catch you safely? Cheerleaders are more likely to hold a leadership position in their school or community and cheerleaders work together as a team across racial, social, and economic boundaries. Sports like cheerleading can help kids develop their self-confidence as well as their athleticism.
This year I am returning to competitive cheerleading. For the last month I have been attending tryout practices at a local gym. I have also completed the tryout process and will find out what team I am placed on, on Sunday!
I ultimately want to cheer in College – so in the next two years I will be focusing my efforts on perfecting my skills!
